The 2008 Organic Production Survey which was released on February 3, 2010 counted 254 Idaho farms and ranches that were either USDA certified organic or were exempt from certification because their sales totaled less than $5,000. These farms had a total of 148,425 acres, which included 93,946 acres of harvested cropland and 37,334 acres of pastureland. Idaho’s total organic sales equaled $71.3 million, of which $33.6 million were from crops, $5.18 million were from livestock and poultry, and $32.4 million were from livestock and poultry products. Milk sales, at $32.4 million represented 46 percent of total organic sales. Hay sales, totaling $19.9 million, accounted for 28 percent of total organic sales.
Nationally, the survey counted 14,540 U.S. farms and ranches that were either USDA certified organic or were exempt from certification because their sales totaled less than $5,000. These operations comprised 4.08 million acres of land, of which 1.60 million acres were harvested cropland and 1.85 million acres were pasture or rangeland. The nation’s certified and exempt organic farms had average sales and production expenses that were higher than those of U.S. farms overall. Organic operations had an average of $217,675 in sales, compared with $134,807 for all farms as reported in the 2007 Census of Agriculture. Production expenditures averaged $171,978 per organic farm, compared with the nationwide average of $109,359 for all farms.
