Both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees this week proposed bills that would substantially reduce funding for the Export Enhancement Program (EEP) in fiscal year 1997 (Oct.-Sept.). The House Committee approved a bill that would reduce EEP funding by $90 million from the current $100 million to $10 million, while the Senate Committee bill would cut $50 million from the program. The measures are part of a large appropriation package that would use unspent funding to provide some $5 billion in disaster relief for states, such as North Dakota, that have experienced severe flooding this spring. The U.S. has not utilized the EEP program since July 1995.
